There are many different definitions of medians, depending on the branch of Mathematics that they are used. They are used both in Algebraic and geometrical concepts.

In Algebra, the median is the middle number. Basically, it is the number dividing the lesser numbers from the greater numbers. So in order to get the median of a certain set of numbers, you would need to locate it by first arranging the numbers in the set in increasing order, and then locating the middle number or the median.

This is easier with sets with odd amount of numbers, however, in sets with even amount of numbers, you would end up with two middle numbers. So how do you get the median then? It’s very simple: you just add the two middle numbers and then divide the sum by two. The answer would be the median value.

With Geometry however, the median value is arrived at differently. The median of the triangle for example can be illustrated by drawing a line from the vertices going to the middle point of the base line opposite them. The value of these medians can then be computed by using Apolloniu’s theorem, correlating the lengths of the medians by the lengths of the sides of the triangle.

If you draw out all three medians of the triangle, they would intersect in one point in the center of the triangle called the centroid. And with all three medians drawn, you would then end up with six smaller triangles with equal areas.

Another type of median in geometry is called the geometrical median which is constantly used in statistics as an estimator of location. The geometric median is also used in the problem of facility location which is a branch of computational geometry which concerns itself with creating models and solutions to different mathematical problems that is concerned with placing certain facilities in the best locations and areas that would optimize proximity to make it less costly for transportation and more effective than other competitor’s facilities.
